Details 1 to 15

These pieces are enlarged portions of previous paintings as the title suggests. Each piece is entitled using a detail number and the name of the painting from which it was taken.

The square shape comes from the usual format of details shown in Art publications.

The proportion of the details puts a heavy emphasis on the stylized technique. At 36” x 36” the details are, in most cases, larger than the entire original painting.

The process of working from a painting rather than from life or photographs removes all of the distracting, realistic details that were filtered out in the original process.

Many of these images are actually closer to the original vision than the original painting which was created among the distractions. Thus, the Detail more closely approaches true inspiration.

With notably fewer landscape reference points the pieces slide in genre from landscape toward abstract. The occasional spot of sky or a branch contribute a degree of comfort and familiarity. These coupled with organic shapes and colours inspired by Nature (twice removed) provide a pleasant yet stimulating experience.
